An Introduction to Nature PhotographyBanshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Virginia Good nature photography requires more than a mastering of the techniques. It requires a person to become creative, to develop a vision that makes the image stand out from all the others. This workshop goes beyond the technical advice on how to capture outstanding images of nature to providing guidance on using approaches and techniques to create nature photographs that capture the "essence of the moment." The workshop establishes a foundation for helping the participant understand the (1) basic techniques of good nature photography, (2) the importance of developing a personal style in photography, and (3) the use of compositional guidelines for creating exceptional images. While emphasis will be placed on digital photography techniques, film users are welcome to attend. Topics to be covered include: overview and recommendations of equipment for nature photography; basic overview of camera settings and effective use of the tripod; overview of techniques for wildlife, landscape, wildflower and close-up photography. Other topics will include developing an effective digital workflow for downloading, editing, saving, and printing images. The workshop is geared for participants at the beginning and intermediate skills level. The workshop does not cover theory, but instead emphasizes practical applications and techniques. The workshop setting is classroom with time scheduled for going into the field to practice the techniques covered and to complete classroom assignments. Participants will need to bring their cameras, lenses, flash, tripod, and other accessories (list to be provided later). For digital camera users, a laptop is recommended so images taken during the workshop can be edited. Methods of instruction include classroom instruction, slide presentations and video tapes, camera and field technique demonstrations, and Q&A sessions. Participants will be given assignments to complete during their time in the field. Time will be allotted for editing images taken during the workshop. On the last day we will conclude with a slide program of the participants’ images taken during the workshop. About Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve Tuition for this entire workshop is $395 per person.
